The Master of Science degree in HCI is a three to four semester program consisting of a total of 36 semester-hours. The (semester hours) breakdown for the program is: 9 Fixed core, 12 Flexible core, 11 Specialization and 4 Project.

Fixed Core Courses:
CS/PSYC 6750 Human Computer Interaction 3
PSYC 6018 Principles of Research Design 3
PSYC 7101 Engineering Psychology I: Methods and Controls 3

Information Design and Technology Specialization:
All IDT specialization students are required to take a total of 12 hours (4 courses) in IDT plus 6 credits of masters project. IDT specialization students are only required to take 9 Flexible Core hours instead of 12.

The 4 specialization courses must include:
LCC 6650 Project Studio and 1 of the following courses, preferably taken in the first year of study:

LCC 6310 The Computer as an Expressive Medium 3
LCC 6311 Visual Culture and Design 3
LCC 6312 Design, Technology, and Representation 3
LCC 6313 Principles of Interactive Design 3

LCC 6650 is repeatable; admission to individual sections is by permission of instructor. Up to 6 hours of LCC 6650 can be counted as IDT Specialization hours.

Student may fulfill the rest of the requirement with any other LCC 6000 or 8000 level course.

Multidisciplinary Project (4 semester hours)
This is a required two semester multidisciplinary project.

HCI/IDT students who do the usual HCI Project will take an additional 2 credits of project work, usually during the semester preceding their final semester. The HCI Project will be a total of 6 credits.
HCI/IDT students also have the option of substituting an IDT Masters Project for the HCI Project. The IDT Masters Project requires a detailed proposal which must be submitted one month before the end of the preceding semester: by November 1 for approval for a Spring semester project. The student then registers for 6 credits of masters project work in the final semester. The IDT Masters project requires a detailed design document and a public defense scheduled. In addition, HCI/IDT students will be expected to participate in and to present their project to the HCI masters seminar.
